The Mindanao State University (MSU) is targeting to start this year the development of its planned College of Medicine campus here.
City Councilor Rosalita Nuñez, chair of the council’s committee on education, said Thursday that preparations are underway for the establishment of the new college beside its three-hectare extension campus at the city proper.
She said the state university is specifically planning to develop a 1,650-square meter property as site for the College of Medicine.
Nuñez, who is also a faculty member of the MSU School of Graduate Studies, said university officials disclosed the plan earlier this week.
“They told me that they are ready to start (with the development) of the College of Medicine,” she said.
She said the new college will operate as an extension unit of the MSU main or the MSU College of Medicine, which is located in Marawi City.
The MSU main campus here, which is located in Barangay Tambler, formally opened in 1967 and is now composed of 10 colleges and units — law, graduate studies, agriculture, business administration and accountancy, education, engineering, laboratory high school, natural sciences and mathematics, and social sciences and humanities.
It has an extension campus at the city’s downtown area that hosts its graduate school, laboratory high school and College of Law.
Nuñez said the proposed site of the MSU College of Medicine is owned by the city government.
She said the land title for the site, which was endowed by the defunct Land Settlement and Development Corporation to the local government, is still being processed.
The city council had passed a resolution authorizing City Mayor Ronnel Rivera to have the site properly titled based on a request from MSU, she said.
